What Are The Different Styles And Types Of Breast Implants?

There are two different implants available to a breast augmentation patient and you will need to talk with you surgeon to determine what implants may be available to you.

One of the more common breast implants currently used in today’s breast augmentation is that of the saline filled implant. The reason this implant has become so popular is its ability to be placed by means of an incision that will be out of view and thus reducing the possibility of visible unsightly scarring. These saline filled implants feature and RTV silicone shell that can be placed in the breasts empty and then filled with a saline solution after being placed. The use of these saline filled breast implants also means that the incision will be smaller. Usually the incision is just large enough to fit the endoscope in which will be used to create a path to the breasts as well as creating the pockets in which the implant will be situated at.

As far as the ever popular silicone implants, these implants can actually be broken down into various generations. The first generation was a teardrop shaped silicone implant originally designed back in the 1960’s that features a Dacron patch. These first generation implants were soon replaced by the need for a more life like feel in the breasts bringing to life the second generation silicone implants during the mid 1970’s. These implants were very flawed since they used a thinner shell and had a better tendency to rupture or leak the silicone gel into the capsular. After several class action lawsuits against the manufacture in the 1990’s these were later covered by a thin polyurethane coating to prevent rupture.

Starting in the mid 1980’s the third and fourth generation of silicone implants became available. These were designed as a means to use current technology as a means of preventing possible ruptures associated with previous generations. They featured an elastomer coated shell and had a thicker more cohesive silicone gel in them preventing some ruptures and leakage.

The fifth generation of the silicone breast implant has been commonly dubbed the gummy bear implant. These implants feature a solid cohesive silicone gel filling that is resistant to leaks and next to impossible to rupture. The reason they are called gummy bear implants is because of their feel which closely resembles that of a gummy bear candy.
