Traveling Back to the 1950s

by Carl Nute

There’s nothing like going back in time to when things had true meaning and you had time to enjoy life. Television shows like “Happy Days” or even “The Andy Griffith Show” came alive in homes once a week. Now you can bring the 50′s style back into your home.

The first step in this type of home decor is to go to grandma’s house. If you are in your mid-twenties or early thirties, chances are your grandparents would have been teenagers in the 1950s. This is the best place to start your planning stage. Go through old photos and even the attic or basement to find anything that looks like it would fit into that era. Also ask your grandmother or grandfather to help you with this type of design. Their memories and advice will be invaluable and they may also know of a few places that still carry certain hard to find items.

You may actually notice that this 50s look is almost considered as a more modern when you start looking into it, instead of being classified as an older style. The types of furniture that were used in the 50s were straight lined and some vibrant colors. A nice bright room can make you and guests feel happy and at ease.

Finding the items that fit into your 1950s retro design can be done easily. Don’t forget to go and look at garage sales, flea markets and those great second hand stores in your area. But keep in mind that if you are trying to do your kitchen in this style that the prices for appliances may run up. This is why it’s so important to find ways that you can find the items that you want, you may be able to find some good prices and still stay within a budget by shopping around a little.

While in search of the right look for your home check in places like second hand shops or even flea markets to find anything that you want to decorate with. The major appliances can even be duplicated in your kitchen today but you may find that they are expensive. Today the manufactures are required to meet modern codes when producing the “retro” look.

Rugs are especially popular in this design. Purchase rugs that are bright in color and abstract. Look for wool rugs or shag rugs. This was not only popular in the 50′s but the 60′s and 70′s as well.

Keep in mind that it is important to find the balance between the “retro style” and the modern style. Although it is going to cost more money for this look it will be worth every penny.
