I bet you have many electronic devices and gadgets in your home. These are the ones that have long ago become common and normal, like TV sets, mobile phones, computers, CD-players, MP3-players, DVD-players and others. Some of them are very handy and practically irreplaceable, and some just provide the way to spend your leisure time. Anyway, most of us have them, use them and can’t do without them.
Of course, times change and many innovations appear, and as you watch that advertisement you want to throw away every electronic gadget you have and buy something more modern and classy. If you actually do this, something must be done with those gadgets that you don’t want to use any more. You can simply throw them away with the rest of the garbage, but before you do that stop for a moment and think whether there is a much more useful way of disposing of those useless things. Apart from being extremely harmful for the environment as they get into the landfills, the electronics can serve a much more useful purpose. Most people know how to recycle products like paper and plastic, but it is time to think about electronics as well. In some countries it is even forbidden to throw these items away. So what should you do with electronic gadgets in order to be eco-friendly?
• Donate your electronic gadgets. Isn’t it wonderful to share something with people who need it much more than you? You can gather every electronic gadget in your home that you mo longer want to use and give it to other people. Of course, if you are not into charity you can simply sell those gadgets for reduced price. One more thing you can do is to buy used electronic gadgets if you don’t mind it – some of them look practically new and function perfectly, and they are sold by people who want to buy something different and get rid of the older things, just like you.
• Recycle your electronic gadgets. There are plenty of manufacturers who will readily accept your old electronic gadgets for recycling, in particular almost all mobile phone producers accept old phones for recycling. There are also some days when municipalities organize recycling of electronic gadgets.
• A few words about recycling batteries. As a rule alkaline and general purpose batteries are not considered to be dangerous for the environment, but in some states, particularly in California there are special laws and programs which oblige the citizens to dispose of these type of batteries in accordance with the law. In most cases there are no special rules for recycling these types of batteries. As to rechargeable batteries, there are some institutions that accept them for recycling, and it would be a very good idea to address them if you have some unnecessary rechargeable batteries.
