Grease is the word! One of the most popular musical films of all time, Grease was commercially and critically successful. It made a household name of Olivia Newton-John and furthered John Travolta’s status as a dancing and singing super star.

Grease was first released in 1978 and is based on the stage musical of the same name. Directed by Randal Kleiser, Grease is a boy-meets-girl story of teenage love in a 1950s American High School. The movie’s soundtrack is one of the highest selling musical albums and supplied a number of hit singles, including You’re the One That I Want, Summer Nights and Hopelessly Devoted to You.

The film follows the relationship of Danny Zuko and Sandy Olsson from their first meeting in the summer to their rocky reunion at Rydell High and the black leather clad happily ever after. Upon its release the film quickly became the highest grossing musical movie of its time, knocking The Sound of Music from the top spot. Re-released in 1998, fans flocked to the cinema to mark the 20th anniversary of the originals debut. And in the U.S earlier this month a sing-a-long version of the film was released in selected cinemas.

Unfortunately, the ill-advised sequel Grease 2 did not fair as well, but this has not marred the popularity of the original. Empire magazine has voted Grease among the top 500 films of all time and viewers of Channel 4 declared it the best movie musical ever in 100 Greatest Musicals.
