Learn Acoustic Guitar – How To Learn Guitar Strumming

Learning to play a favorite songs is one of the top reasons people pick up a guitar. A vital part of playing your favorite songs on the guitar is to learn how to strum.

Some people don’t like learning strumming because they think it’s more about ‘feel’ than practice. This is not entirely true. It’s true that when you learn a chord you either know it or you don’t. The same can be said about a scale. What you need to realize is that strumming patterns can be learned too.

You strum the guitar with either a pick or your thumb. You can’t just jump into playing massive solos and complicated finger picking without some guitar strumming lessons.

The first secret to become a proficient strummer is to let your hand relax. Just like any other exercise you need to stretch your muscles beforehand. You are trying to get the tension out of your fingers. This is very important because a tense strumming hand will translate to poor playing.

When you have stretched your hands relaxed it’s time to start strumming. You should begin by playing simple down strums only and counting regular beats. Start of by only playing one chord. Once have mastered strumming with one chord you can start changing between chords.

Once down strums are in the bag you will want to add up strums. The next thing you will want to do is add up strums to your strumming patterns. You do not make up strums as ‘loud’ sounding as down strums.
