The person that is in charge of all duties regarding a service center for a car dealer is known as the automotive service manager. This person works to create a relationship between the car owner and the mechanics. They are in charge of customer relations and satisfaction. It is this person who oversees the profits and efficiency of the department. This involves repairs, sales and maintenance of all associated records.
This individual is also in charge of supervising all elements of safety as they pertain to maintenance of customer’s autos. The auto service manager reports to the dealer or the sales manager and must report to them all situations that pertain to the department, including their proficiency and ability to reach the goals set by the dealership for the department. Part of this process includes creating and running a sales plan. They must not only mange all current business but must be involved in the recruitment of all new customers. This can include individuals in the community with cars that were not sold by the dealer.
New vehicles repairs are typically covered by warranties. It is the responsibility of the automotive service manager to understand the intricacies of all warranties and to inform the staff of this information. Service managers must also beware of any information obtained relative to recalls.
An individual who gets hired for this position will usually have an extensive mechanical background, preferably with the dealer or at least in the line of cars the dealer sells and services. This experience is pertinent to understanding the full realm of the job and its responsibilities. Being familiar with the line of cars carried by the dealer helps greatly in their ability to complete the tasks of the job.
Most car dealers provide this individual with a good salary and compensation package. Some dealers will provide the service manager with their own demo car and they may have a full set of benefits. This position can be an excellent opportunity for a seasoned mechanic to move up to a higher level of responsibility and pay.
