Organizational Team Building – Something Consultants Will Not Let You Know
Team Building is about character – yours! The plethora of information distibuted across the western world offers a smorgasbord of choices for business. Hypotheses are fine but I’ve found the practicalities another issue and so will you! Team building takes work but the results are worthwhile. The necessary ingredients are forbearance and time.
If you really want to build a team which will achieve excellent results you can. If your organization is attempting to put into effect a quality management system then team building will be an essential component of this system. Over time team work has been the flavour of the day with many businesses spending substantial money in making an attempt to achieve a positive and balanced team structure.
Some have found the results that they looked for but many have not. An ISO 9001 consultant might have you believe that if you follow a set of elements or axioms then it’ll all work out. Not so as you cannot put all humans in a box and expect likeminded consistency. Team building has a number of foundation building blocks that are needed for a team to function.
Some managers and owners become fired up about team possibilities only to become tired over time where the pressures of business and daily life grind them down. Your commitment by way of your action and time are important to your groups success.
It takes time to build groups. Trust and respect need to be earnt and there aren’t any short cuts. Make a decision to pay the price tag and demonstrate your commitment. Life often throws us a curve ball and only a few of our plans go according to the script. Make a pledge to have patience and as long as you see incremental progress, you will realize progress is progress.
Learn to celebrate your successes as a team as you go along and learn from failure. Failure is an amazing teacher if you look at it that way. If you own the business or are a chief realize that you are especially under scrutiny of your team more so when failure occurs. Your reaction to switch and failure will finally decide the amount of faith in you, you achieve from your team.
As entrepreneurs we are sometimes scared to delegate. Begin with small things and as your team gets confidence and does the proper thing increase the responsibility. Be quick to profit from each other. The least likely team member might be sitting on the solution you’ve been attempting to find in your business.
Many chiefs and workers are rotten listeners. Learn to hear what folks are actually announcing and don’t devalue their contributions. It’s been announced that youngsters need seven compliments to counterbalance one negative statement.
How much more critical then is it to encourage your team. Any person can condemn however a good chief and team member knows the best way to give genuine support. Show genuine interest.
Before beginning my business I once usurped an organisation that was almost beyond repair, no quality management system, or indeed any type of system was in place . By applying these principals and by listening and resourcing staff I took the company from a damaging loss to a significant profit inside 1 year. This was a complex business with complex folks and significant mistrust issues. The price to me was emotional commitment to change and to listen – it worked.
There is a price to pay for success and no short-cuts. The effort you put in will determine the result. You can do it – apply some of these elements and you’ll achieve results. Don’t adopt a herd mentality and be a follower. Pay the price be a ground breaker, a trail blazer and show some character – its worth it. Nothing worth having is gained or appreciated by little effort.
