Understanding How Menopause Symptoms Will Affect Your Life

As much as many women may complain about their monthly menstrual cycles, the fact is that it is rare that a woman looks forward to going through menopause. Here are some symptoms to keep an eye out for if your wife, mother, girlfriend or daughter is around the age that menopause usually starts.

Perhaps one of the most widely recognized and heard about menopause symptoms is the “hot flash”. “Hot flash” is the name of the sudden feeling of being too hot. Your face will get flushed and you will start sweating. The feeling is temporary but it is not that different than if someone reached inside and jacked up the temperature inside of your body. Some women liken it to the experience they feel when they go from an air conditioned room to a hot sunny day, only more intense. Hot flashes can happen at just about any time. When a hot flash occurs during the night, it is usually called a “night sweat.” The irregular heartbeat is perhaps the hardest menopause symptom to find. An irregular heartbeat is a heartbeat that will suddenly get faster or slower without your having to do anything to cause the change to happen. One example is of a woman who is sitting still who feels her heart suddenly start racing and then, after a moment, it slows way way down. Other women do not notice this symptom at all. Once in a while a woman will only learn that this has been happening is when she visits the doctor for something else. A doctor checks the woman’s heart during a routine exam and notices that it is not acting as it should. Depending on your age, this could be a menopause symptom.

Having your period stop is the most obvious symptom of going through menopause. If you suddenly stop having your period or if it changes in frequency, duration or “strength” you could be going through menopause. Don’t forget that the absence of your menstrual cycle is not always the signal for menopause. Believe it or not, there are some women who say that they have heavier periods right before they go into menopause. If you notice any change to your monthly cycle and are getting close to the age when menopause starts to set in, talk to your doctor.

Learning to identify menopause symptoms will help you better understand what is going on in your own body as you go through your change of life. As a man, you should learn these symptoms so that you will be more understanding of what the women in your life are going through as they go through their changes.
