Techniques Applied In Offset Printing

Printing service is used by most companies for different reasons such as marketing and intra-company communications. Therefore it is helpful to learn about the basic working of the frequently used printing process called offset printing.

Offset printing can generate a large number of prints quickly, which makes it more economical than other technologies and also more well known. The clients giving big printing orders are recommended by the printers to choose offset printing because of this reason.

The ink employed during offset printing has oil as the medium and is insoluble in water. The offset printing is so called because the designs are transmitted indirectly from the plates to the paper by use of rubber blankets as the agents.

First step is to prepare the images. When offset printing started, the images had to be developed by the use of film negatives and they were later put on aluminum plates. In the present times, the printers can use the image setting system for preparing the plates directly. The next step is to attach the plate on to a cylinder in the right manner. Thereafter water, and then ink, is spread on the image plates. The ink is poured over the image and to restrict it from spilling, a thin layer of water is put over the remaining part of the plate.

The image is then taken from the plates to the rubber blanket spun on another cylinder, so that it is reversed. The image is inverted to its right side by transferring the image to sheets that have been cut according to the need and are put on a different cylinder.

Printed sheets are stapled, glued, or assembled in any other manner as needed and the printing company delivers them after giving some finishing touches.

The most common kind of offset printing uses photosensitive chemicals and photographic techniques in transferring pictures and typing from source materials to printing plates. In present use, master copy may be the current photographic print and typeset text. Yet, it is more common, with the prevalence of computers and digital images, that the original material exists only as data in a digital printing system.
