Internationally Acclaimed Films Of Bollywood

Hindi film industry is another name for the movie industry, which produces many Hindi films every year. Hindi movie industry owns the credit of producing the most number of films in India. There are many movies produced in Bollywood, which have been at par with a lot of international films, that they were chosen for the Best Foreign Language Film in Academy Awards.

Such an iconic and popular film is Mother India. It was Mehboob Khan who revamped the characters of his previous film Aurat (1940) and scripted this movie. The film narrating the social set up of old India has Nargis Dutt and Sunil Dutt, essaying the important roles in the film. The main character in this movie is a poor woman from the village with high moral values and a strong will power. However she kills her son, in the end, to protect her promise to the landlord. The Academy Awards jury chose Mother India as one of the five films to compete in the category of Best Foreign Language Film. Mother India represents India after it got freedom and became the 1st Indian movie to compete with other movies from foreign countries.

Salaam Bombay! became the 2nd film to be chosen from India at the Oscars from the long list of other movies in Hindi film industry. Released in 1988, this film depicted the lives of a lot of street children from Bombay (new name Mumbai). The movie has bagged numerous awards in a lot of national and international movie festivals. Golden Camera Award (Cannes Film Festival), Montreal World Film Festival and the National Film Award for the Best Feature film were only a few of the awards given for this movie, directed by Mira Nair.

Lagaan with Amir Khan in the main role was the 3rd entry from India to the Academy Awards. Released in 2001, the movie is set up in the background of Victorian era, where the British Government ruled India. Lagaan is about a village, which unites to voice out their protest against the increase in the tax by the British Government. This Ashutosh Gowariker film was completed with 250 million rupees as budget, which featured British actors as well.

The 4th movie to be chosen for the category of Best Foreign Language Film was Water by Deepa Mehta, who was born in India. The societal set up prevailed in India (in 1938) was depicted in this movie. The movie, which started off many controversies, featured many talented Indian actors like Liza Ray, Vinay Pathak, Raghubir Yadav and John Abraham.

Rang De Basanti, made by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, brought the current India to the silver screen through some college students. The movie brings forth the evolution of the students from being inactive to corrupt social system to changing the rules by giving their lives. The film made a huge impact on young Indians, who were disappointed with the corrupt Government. The film became the official entry from India after facing a tough competition from other movies.
