Looking Back At Famous Weddings
Throughout the course of history, weddings of famous people have drawn the interest and wonderment of the public. Today such unions involving one person (or two people for that matter) of recognition are just as popular as ever. Here are four examples of weddings that people other than those getting hitched still remember and talk about.
Between efforts to conquer the world, in 1796 Napoleon was able to make time to marry Josephine de Beauharnais. This was 26 years after Louis XVI married Marie Antoinette. Much ado and fanfare was involved with this union even with the groom arriving 2 hours late. Josephine de Beauharnais became the first empress of France. Unfortunately in 1810 the two were divorced because she was unable to provide him an heir.
On May 1, 1967, hundreds, maybe thousands of women were brought to tears to learn that Elvis Presley was no longer a single man. He had first met Priscilla Beaulieu in Germany in 1959 when she was just 14 years old. The pair was married in Las Vegas at the Aladdin Hotel.
Those familiar with American history know of the marriage between the early English settler of North America John Rolfe and Pocahontas in 1614. Though the marriage lasted only three years because of her death they did have one child. Amazingly this created a lineage that ultimately led to the birth of Edith Galt in 1872. In 1915 this descendant of Pocahontas married the 28th president of the United States, Woodrow Wilson.
Possibly the most famous wedding which was televised and viewed by over 700 million people in 1981 was the one between Charles, Prince of Wales and Lady Diana Spencer. Nearly 2 million people lined the streets of Diana’s route to St. Paul’s Cathedral and about 3500 people watched from the congregation.
This has only scratched the surface of history’s famous weddings. History is rich with the legacy of unions between two people, whether it includes the six marriages of Henry the Eighth or the first White House wedding during the James Madison administration.
